Broad Reachers

Our big news is that we have a new Princess! We extremely proud to announce that Mary Jane Peabody was officially crowned at the Valentine's Day Dance at the Clubhouse on the beach. She has worked tirelessly to give us law and order. She always smiles and pitches in when the hauling of boats, folding of sailings and all the other myriad of hard, physical tasks need to be done. We congratulate you, and thank you, Mary Jane. May your reign be an enjoyable one! Once again, Waldo Jones wrote an original poem, perfect for our Princess. Programs for the event were graced by original artwork by Mr. Frank Hurley and Carol Hansen's D' Band provided a great musical evening.
The Mystery Race, scheduled for February 19th became a fun-filled day on the water as we had a Poker Run. Anne O'Dell placed First in the race with Tricia Billings coming in Second, and Carol Jurca, Third. Tricia also had the winning Poker hand, and Jeanette Erb, had the next best. Sue Lapp once again proved to be the perfect Hostess with shot glass favors packed with chocolate for all, and martini glasses filled with wonderful goodies for the winners of the Poker Run. Both of these containers were hand-painted by Sue (although it seems she forgot to sign them!)
There was just enough air to keep the boats moving on the 26th, so Barbara Arnold, who won the 1st race and Diana Sowers, who won both the 2nd and 3rd races, worked really hard. To sail or not to sail, that was the question on March 5. Winds were good, but gusty, and Diana Sowers, Captain Mary Jane and Jeanette Erb did venture forth for a fun(?) sail.

Race Committee this month was: Mary Robinson, Chairman, Betty Sanders, Betty Hurley, Sue Lapp, Barb Shaw and Waldo Jones. Thank you for your dedication, ladies! Sailors this month were: Barbara Arnold, Wendy Savage, Anne, O'Dell, Tricia Billings, Martha Metcalf, Barb Shaw, Carol Jurca, Diana Sowers, Colleen Kennedy, Charl Hadfield and Jeanette Erb. This month the Knotty Buoys were: Steve Peabody, Walt Shaw, Stu Greene and Lou Born. We appreciate your hard work!

Tuesday, March 1, Salty Broad, Carol Hansen, sailing for the Broad Reachers, and Jeanette Erb participated in an Interclub at the Sailing Center. This event was sponsored by the Salty Sisters of SPYC. The day was overcast, good wind, and rainy for a short time as we were out on Tampa Bay. The race was won by Salty Sister Joanne Simmons, with Carol Hansen, placing 2nd and. Martha Metcalf came in 3rd.. Great job, ladies!

Please come sail with us on Saturday mornings at 9 AM. You may enjoy the Race Committee or just come and learn the ropes. We have a great two-week sailing program for 9 - 13 year olds coming up June 13 through the 24th. We could use a few good volunteers!
