BROAD REACHERS

Our New Year has started off well – we are taking full advantage of our eleven new Broad Reachers. We welcome Donna Evans, Jayne Fiocca, Bev Garnett, Charl Hadfield, Carol Hansen, Penny Levin, Anne O’Dell, Judi Phagan, Diana Sowers, Nancy Strite and Barbara Weller. We welcome all of you and hope you enjoy being a Broad!
We also want to say congratulations to Tricia Billings and Carol Jurca, two of our Broad Reachers who successfully completed the sailing course provided by the Salty Sisters. They are now full fledged Salty Sisters. All of us are very proud of you!
Our regular sailing on December 18 was cancelled. The “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Sail” scheduled for December 28 was cancelled due to inclement weather.
For the Captain’s Race on January 8, there were eight participants. This was an “Anything Goes” sail as the current was much stronger than the wind. Charl Hadfield sailed for Mary Robinson and came in First. Second place was Penny Levin sailing for Waldo Jones and third place was taken by Colleen Kennedy, sailing for Len Jurca. Sue Lapp provided hand-painted plates as prizes and the Safety Boat was once again manned by Steve Peabody and Walt Shaw. Thank you to all who participated.
January 15 will be a fun sail and our General Meeting. Our special guest will be Commodore Vargas and his wife, Renee. Our meeting will start at 12 noon and reservations are requested.
On the 19th of January, the T.I. Tackers will host the FWSA meeting at The Club at Treasure Island . Then on Thursday, January 27th, the Broad Reachers will host an Interclub at Pass-A-Grille.
At long last we would like to honor Mary Robinson this month. Mary has been a Broad Reacher since 1973 when she wanted the opportunity to get out on the water in a boat. Of course, if you want to get on the water, you have to race. And this she did, until about five years ago. At one time or another, she has been Treasurer, Secretary, Co-Captain, Captain and was our 1985 Princess. Mary has a great sense of humor and it is always hard to wait for her entertaining reports. At the present time, Mary is heading up the Race Committee, so you can see she is still very involved. Mary would like volunteers to help and will train you in procedures, one step at a time. All of our regular races are on Saturdays and Race Committee should be there at 9:30 AM for the Captain’s Meeting. Please volunteer today.
