Mary Jane & Waldo
Party On!
Work Brigade
Our Annual Meeting took place on Saturday, May 14th. There was no sailing beforehand. Nominating Committee Chair Colleen Kennedy, along with Tricia Billings and Sue Lapp announced the new officers who will serve starting in September. Congratulations are in order for Charl Hadfield, our new Captain; Diana Sowers, Race Captain; Carol Hansen, Interclub Chair; Jeanette Erb, Secretary; Mickie McMenamin Co-secretary; Betty Hurley, Treasurer; and Carol Hansen, Co-Treasurer. Thanks are given to Captain Mary Jane Peabody; Race Captain, Carol Jurca and Race Committee Chair, Mary Robinson for serving this past year. Delegates to FWSA were also announced: First, Jeanette, Erb; Second, Carol Hansen; and Alternate, Mary Jane Peabody. A thank you to Barbara Shaw for serving as past First Delegate.
Barbara Arnold and Charl Hadfield reported on the classes offered at the Sailing Center. We are pleased to announce that in order to continue the legacy of offering beginning sailing lessons to youngsters, scholarships have been awarded to two youngsters who participated in last year's Junior Sailing Program. Donations made by Julia Sorbo, Ferne Blake and Waldo Jones help make it possible for the Broad Reachers to cover the total class fees for the two-week course at the Sailing Center for David Brizzi and Sofia Wesley. We know that this will be an exciting program for them and they will make us proud!
We are pleased to announce that our newly designed burgee has been approved. Expect to see this on our shirts and sails, along with other applications.
A great end-of-year party was held at Captain Mary Jane and Steve Peabody's home on the 14th. Entertainment was provided by Doug Bliss. It was a wonderful evening with great company and lots of gourmet delights.
Spring meeting of FWSA was held in Venice, on Thursday, May 19th. Captain Mary Jane, FWSA President, Sue Lapp and former Captain Betty Sanders represented the Broads.
An equipment review work team was organized by Diana Sowers on Saturday, May 21. Barbara Watson-Clapp led the sail check team, aided by Tricia Billings and Carol Jurca. The boat scrubbers were: Mary Jane Peabody, Charl Hadfield, Carol Jurca, who also replaced sail ties, and Jeanette Erb. Charl also led the charge on cleaning and organizing the entire garage where the prams are stored! Mary Jane also worked in this area which was much improved when they were done. Jello shots by Jeanette. Much muscle power was provided by Rick Sowers, Len Jurca, and Roger Erb who hauled boats in and out. Diana very graciously treated the ladies to a beverage and the Broad Reachers treated the fellows for a job well done. A sincere thanks to all -- we know those boats will now skim across the water!
We expect to have fun sails before regular Saturday sailing commences mid -September. If you are not currently a Broad Reacher, please contact Diana Sowers if you would like to join us. 727.525.0470 or mine.alone@knology.net or Charl Hadfield at 727.515.9685 or charlmarie@tampabay.rr.com Our dues are only $25.00 annually.
