A very cold jet stream from the North prevented Broad Reachers from being on the water on March 12. The scheduled "Wearing O' the Green' Race”, which should have taken place on March 19, did not happen due to a battery failure on the safety boat.
All systems were go on the 26th so that Captain Mary Jane Peabody, Gina Bowden-Pierce, Charl Hadfield, Tricia Billings, Penny Levin, Colleen Kennedy and Martha Metcalf did some practice sailing with invaluable on-the-water instruction by Barbara Watson-Clapp. Time well spent!
Third Nona Bolster Memorial Race on the second of April was well attended. First Place was Nancy Strite, Second, Carol Hansen and Third Place, Tricia Billings. Sue Lapp read an original poem about her Mom, written by Waldo Jones. Sue also supplied the winning trophies and favors. Several of the ladies honored the memory of Nona by wearing one blue/one yellow shoe and reading a few 'dusty' poems. At the Pass-A-Grille Community Church of Christ, there will be a Memorial Service on April 21st at 10 AM to honor Nona and inter her ashes.
It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood on April 9, but the seven sailors could have used a little more air. They did, however, manage to complete two races. The first was won by Martha Metcalf, the second by Captain Mary Jane who swept past the field with ease to cross that finish line.
Race Committee this month has been Chairman, Mary Robinson, Betty Sanders, Barbara Shaw, Betty Hurley, Waldo Jones and Sue Lapp. Steve Peabody, Barbara and Walt Shaw, Lou Born, Barbara Watson-Clapp, and Captain Mary Jane have been manning the safety boat. Stu Greene was a great help on the dock.
Like so many good things that must come to an end, so it is with the Junior Sailing Program which has been a major project of the Broad Reachers since 1975. On a positive note, we are instead, going to promote sailing by sponsoring scholarships for interested children.
We are looking forward to a sail on Boca Ciega Bay with Captain Dan Peretz out of Dolphin Landing on Monday, May 2nd.
